Project Description

BOILER & CYLINDER REPLACEMENT

We were asked to advise on the most economical way to upgrade a central heating and hot water system for a young family in Stone. Here’s the result…

The Worcester 18i System Boiler

This popular system boiler is suitable for small to medium sized homes. Combined with a hot water storage cylinder, it provides a highly energy efficient system. The controls are easy to use and it’s low energy pump reduces electrical usage.

What is a system boiler?

Unlike a combination boiler, which provides both heating and hot water in one unit, a system boiler works in conjunction with a separate cylinder for storing the hot water. Cold water enters a system boiler directly from the mains supply. It is heated via a heat exchanger, then pumped into the cylinder and stored until needed. This allows for a constant supply of hot water, making a system boiler ideal if you have more than one bathroom or shower. Furthermore, you don’t need a header tank in your loft like you do with a conventional boiler.

Upgrading the system

Having a young family, our clients in Stone, Staffordshire, needed an effective, reliable system. Their previous heat only boiler and open vent cylinder was in need of an upgrade.

After carrying out their own research and receiving quotations from several companies they could not decide if keeping a hot water cylinder was justified.

At SDB, we believe in providing the best possible solution. So we took time to discuss the needs of the family and plan for the future. We then came up with two equally effective heating and hot water solutions:

  1. Remove the current boiler and hot water cylinder and replace them with a combination boiler. As with the existing boiler, it would be located in the garage. A combi boiler would give them instant hot water and increase the hot water pressure across the property.
  2. Replace the current boiler with a system boiler. And replace the open vent hot water cylinder with a pressurised unvented hot water cylinder. The unvented cylinder would give them a larger storage of hot water. In addition, the pressurised water eliminates the need for shower pumps.

After careful review, they decided on the latter.

We fitted a Worcester Greenstar 18i system boiler and a Telford Tempest pressurised unvented hot water cylinder. It’s protected by a Worcester central heating filter.

Because SDB is a member of Worcester’s Accredited Installer scheme, we were able to offer the client a 10 year manufacturers guarantee.

We also flushed the old system with the appropriate chemicals to remove as much sludge as possible.

To give themselves complete control of their new system, the clients also opted for a Nest Pro learning thermostat. These clever little devices enable the client to control their heating and hot water from their smartphones – no matter where they are.

Convenience, indeed.
